In the heart of the Quartiere Arcobaleno, one of Milan’s most authentic and charming neighborhoods, NORISTUDIO presents a new renovation project that engages in a dialogue with the history and identity of its urban context.
This small corner of Milan, slightly off the beaten path, was conceived in the 1880s as part of a workers’ cooperative initiative. Its aim was not only to provide simple and affordable housing for laborers working in the area—built thanks also to the collective contribution of those who would later inhabit them—but also to improve and enrich their quality of life.
Today, among quiet streets and architecture imbued with the charm of another era, NORISTUDIO interprets this cooperative and authentic spirit through a contemporary residential project that is discreet yet full of character.
The intervention, while preserving the original structure, unfolds across three levels in keeping with the traditional Milanese townhouse typology. The DNA of the building’s vertical development has been made more functional through a carefully considered interior design.
The ground floor features two living areas: an outdoor one set in the private garden, and an indoor one within a bright living space designed to host everyday life. The first and second floors are dedicated to the sleeping quarters, more intimate in nature, with views over the neighborhood that create a dialogue between private interiors and the urban landscape.
The basement level houses the kitchen—the domestic heart of the project—which unexpectedly opens onto a small hidden garden, a secluded and intimate space that enhances the sense of calm.
The staircase, a compelling element of connection and continuity between spaces, allows natural light to reach all three levels thanks to an oculus set into the roof, ensuring zenithal light throughout, like a large gallery of light.
The color palette alternates light, natural tones with bolder accents, creating a balance between lightness and character. The colors echo the surrounding nature, as if to bring greenery indoors and break down the boundaries between nature and the built environment, generating a chromatic perception of continuity and serenity.
The result is a project that integrates respectfully into the historic fabric of the neighborhood, enhancing its convivial spirit and understated charm, always with the tailor-made approach that defines NORISTUDIO’s style. Custom-made furnishings and classic ceramics add a distinctive touch, making the overall atmosphere elegantly contemporary.
